In what was the final tournament of the year for all Ontario U16 Girls Major Midget teams, the players showcased the drive, the determination, and the energy that one would expect during a Championship trek. One of the final Ontario Cup events to take place this season, it was undoubtedly a memorable experience in Niagara for everyone involved!
The tournament, hosted for the second straight year by the Niagara Sport Commission, featured eight divisions comprised of 62 teams. Clubs came near and far, from the local confines of Niagara Falls, to the far north of Thunder Bay and Algoma, and all across Ontario. Each team came ready to close out their season with provincial gold, and for eight teams, they came away with just that. There were countless close finishes, a number of clutch plays, and some definite standout performances, all culminating in three days of impressive all around basketball.
The top division, played along with Division 2 out of Niagara College, saw the SBA Lady Blues and Blessed Sacrament battle for the top spot in what was a spirited, hard-fought Gold Medal game. Despite a hard push by Blessed Sacrament in the second half, a strong first half performance launched SBA to a 64-63 victory and a Division 1 Gold! The Division 2 final, meanwhile, featured another tight contest, with the deciding points coming with just four seconds left in the game. This final second basket helped the KW Lightning defeat the hometown Niagara Falls Red Raiders by a score of 41-39. Each of the remaining Gold Medal matches brought with it a great competitive nature, truly showcasing the most talented teams in Ontario. The Niagara Sport Commission would like to once again thank everyone involved in making the tournament a great success, including the players and coaches who gave it their all each and every game, the spectators who created a high energy environment all weekend long, and the volunteers who helped keep each site well taken care of from start to finish.
