NIAGARA BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU OPEN
In 2012 and 2013, the Niagara Sport Commission has partnered with Modern Vision Mixed Martial Arts & Fitness to present the Niagara Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open, a tournament whose goal is to raise awareness of the sport in extended communities and outline the benefits of the discipline of Brazilian Jit-Jitsu. The one-day event has been held in March in the spacious Bob Davis Gymnasium at Brock University in St. Catharines, and has attracted 1,000 participants over the past two years. Many division winners and top performing athletes receive prizes from Niagara Businesses, encouraging people to experience areas of Niagara they may not have been familiar with before, or never took the time to enjoy!
NIAGARA SPORT INDUSTRY CONGRESS
The Niagara Sport Commission hosted the Inaugural Niagara Sport Industry Congress in March of 2013. Over 300 high school and university students aspiring to work in the field of Sport and Sport Management attended a two day congress at the Four Points Sheraton St. Catharines in Thorold. The congress featured Industry Leaders and Experts, National Sport Organizations, Provincial Sport Organizations, Collegiate and University Athletic Directors, and Entrepreneurs in Sport.
Ian Troop, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games, and Tom Wright, Director of Operations UFC Canada, and Brent Barootes, President of The Partnership Group, were the keynote speakers at the event.
ONTARIO BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIPS
For the past three years, the Niagara Sport Commission partnered with the Niagara Falls Red Raiders to host various Ontario Cups – Provincial Basketball Championships to the Niagara Region.
In 2013, over 1,500 players participated in the Major Atom Under 12 Boys Basketball Championships and the Juvenile Under 17 Boys Basketball Championships. The action took place in 11 gymnasiums thoughout the Niagara Region.
ROYAL CANADIAN HENLEY REGATTA
For the past two years, the Niagara Sport Commission have assisted with the logistics for the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta.
In 2013, over 3,000 participants including rowers, coaches, organizers, and volunteers enjoyed the amazing weather and rowing conditions during the annual event that took place August 4 – 11 in Port Dalhousie.
GRANFONDO NIAGARA FALLS
GranFondo Niagara Falls, a 125-kilometre ride through Niagara, took place on Saturday, September 14, 2013 with over 1,000 riders participating in the inaugural ride that drew high praise from riders from around the world. Loosely translated from Italian, granfondo means “big ride” or “great endurance.” There were riders from across North America, and from a far a field as the United Kingdom and Japan.
The ride began shortly before 7 a.m. on the Niagara Parkway in front of Niagara Falls, with the route taking riders through Niagara Falls, Niagara-On-The-Lake, Pelham, Thorold, and then back to Niagara Falls ending at Queen Victoria Park.
There was a dedicated traffic-free lane for the entire course, allowing participants to ride at their own pace.
After the conclusion of the ride, the participants were treated to a free concert by Juno Award winning musicians Barney Bentall and Jim Cuddy, who also rode the 125km route of the inaugural GranFondo Niagara Falls.
In September 2012, the Niagara Sport Commission presented the 11Global Niagara Falls Triathlon, an Olympic distance triathlon that started in the waters of the Welland International Flatwater Centre with a 1.5km swim, followed by a 40km bike ride from Welland to the Niagara Parkway, and concluding with a 10km run to the finish line located adjacent to the majestic Niagara Falls.
This Olympic distance triathlon was for athletes 18 years and older and sanctioned by Triathlon Ontario.
