Niagara Winter Games Attracts Over 1,000 participants and visitors
Like a racing thoroughbred, the Niagara Sport Commission burst out of the gates in 2014 by introducing the 1st Niagara Winter Games over the last two weekends in January.
The new multi-sport festival that attracted over 1,000 participants. The festival was made up of tournaments, coaching clinics, and a Meridian Credit Union Try-It Day that took place in five of Niagara’s 12 municipalities.
The Niagara Winter Games opened with 21 teams playing in the Niagara Winter Classic Ball Hockey Tournament, hosted by Ball Hockey International and over 300 gymnasts competing in the Chinese New Year Gymnastics Tournament, hosted by Gymnastics Energy.
There was also a welcome reception held at Boston Pizza, Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls which was highlighted by an Arcade Olympics.
In the second weekend, 17 basketball teams filled three basketball courts for three days at Brock University in the Niagara Falls Red Raiders Basketball Tournament.
“We are really happy with the results of our inaugural year,” said Bram Cotton, Executive Director of the Niagara Sport Commission. “We achieved our goal of the games, which was to bring together hundreds of athletes, coaches, spectators, and all-around sport tourists to Niagara for the opportunity to experience our high-class sporting facilities and warm hospitality.”

Meridian Credit Union ‘Try It’ Day
Multiple YMCA’s in the Niagara Region hosted a Try It Day, that was presented by Meridian Credit Union.
Children and youth between the ages of 5-16 were offered the opportunity to try sports that they may have not yet discovered or participated in. Those sports included:
- Flag Rugby
- Little Kickers Soccer Club
- Niagara Flag Rugby
- Niagara Rapids Volleyball
- Port Colborne Hornets Basketball
